**My Review**

I very much enjoyed Initiation: Sky Raiders Academy Book One. The book starts out when Tommy and his move in with his uncle following his father’s death. After a rough two days at his new school, Tommy is met by Mr. Bellarium. Mr. Bellarium promises Tommy adventure at a new school, Sky Raiders Academy, where students learn to manage the weather. Tommy happily agrees to join the school and starts off on his adventure to become a sky raider. From the beginning the reader is drawn in to Tommy’s story but the story becomes even more exciting in chapter 2 when Tommy is visited by Mr. Bellarium. The book is creative, fun, and keeps the reader engrossed throughout. Connor, my 10 year old, wanted to keep reading and even JT (7), who normally doesn’t stay focused on longer chapter books, was happy to listen to this book. The boys also enjoyed the llamas used a breaks throughout the book. This enchanting book is great for anyone who enjoys a magical-filled fantasy and I highly recommend checking it out.

This weekend we visited The Magik Theatre for their season opener. The Magik Theatre, located in downtown San Antonio, strives to bring children’s literature to life. Duck for President, written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin, is the latest book that they have brought to the stage. The play is adapted by James E. Grote. Music and lyrics are by George Howe and it is directed by Frances Limoncelli.

Here are the boys excitedly waiting for the show to begin.

The boys and I truly enjoyed this play. We’ve been to several of the plays at The Magik Theatre and Duck for President tops my favorites.

The play features Farmer Brown and his animals, Pig, Hen, Cow, and of course, Duck. We watch as Duck decides to run for Farmer, Governor, and President. Each time he thinks that being in charge is going to be a lot of fun but then realizes the jobs are actually hard.

The show was cute and funny and the boys had fun quacking along. There are plenty of songs and jokes incorporated into the play and we were smiling and laughing throughout the entire show.

The show is about an hour long and when it’s over the actors line up by the theatre entrance to sign autographs and take pictures.

She and Giovanni’s pet parrot, Jasper, take him on a magical journey across the globe, visiting places where people eat rice and rocks. This exciting story celebrates the varied traditions of every culture while also highlighting the delicious similarities that bring us all together. Take a look inside the book…

**My Review**

I really loved Rice & Rocks. The author did a great job highlighting the importance of culture and tradition. I loved seeing Giovanni’s journey with his aunt and Jasper the Congo African Grey Parrot to different places around the world to find out if they eat rice and rocks too.
I also loved seeing the illustrations. There was so much detail in each one which made them especially fun to look at. I highly recommend Rice & Rocks. It is truly a great picture book that presents culture and traditions in a way that is easy for kids to understand.

**Connor and JT Say**

Both boys pretty much had the same things to say about this book so I’m putting their reviews together.
They both liked the book. Jasper, the parrot, was their favorite character. They thought he was cool. They would both like to see another book where they go on another trip with Jasper to some other countries to learn about them.

Selfies in the Wild Blog Tour, Review, & Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for C.L. Murphy’s Selfies in the Wild! This is the newest book in The Adventures of Lovable Lobo series. Check out our review and don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

About the Book

Title: The Adventures of Lovable Lobo – Selfies in the Wild

Written and illustrated by C.L. Murphy

Published by Peanut Butter Prose

Date published: August 1, 2016

Recommended ages: 3 to 7

Number of pages: 28

Summary: Lobo and his sidekick raven find a trail camera in their neck of the woods, and it attracts the attention of forest friends. Images captured have never been sillier or more candid. Just as their wild dispositions are exposed, the photo shoot comes to an unexpected end and they’re all left wondering why. The reason may be obvious.

**My Review**

I enjoyed reading C.L. Murphy’s newest book, Selfies in the Wild. This book shows what happens when Lovable Lobo and his friends find a camera in the woods. As soon as I started reading the book I was thinking that it reminded me of the fun pictures I’ve seen from wildlife photographers. At the end of the book C.L. Murphy explains that she was inspired by some animals captured on her own trail camera that seemed to be posing for the camera. It’s so much fun to imagine what these animals are thinking and that’s exactly what C.L. Murphy gives us with this book. Selfies in the Wild is cute and fun to read and kids will enjoy the silly selfies taken by Lovable Lobo and friends.

**JT Says**

“I liked it. The animals are silly.”

Welcome to our stop on the Dragons are Real blog tour!

Title: Dragons are RealAuthor: Valarie Budayr
Illustrator: Michael Welply | Publisher: Audrey Press
Publication Date: May 5, 2016 | Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Number of Pages: 32

Book Description:

What if I told you that all of the fairy tales, myths and legends that have been told about dragons over the years are WRONG? What if I told you that Dragons are indeed REAL and that they are different than you’ve ever imagined? Did you know that Dragons are the master of disguises? Did you know that they love sugar and sweets (at unacceptable levels) and will do anything for treats? Award winning author Valarie Budayr brings us this fairly true story based on her childhood friendship with a REAL live Dragon.

**My Review**

Dragons are Real is a delightful and whimsical children’s picture book. Both the author and illustrator did a wonderful job bringing the book to life. The dragons in the book are colorful and fun and the boys enjoyed looking through the pictures. They had fun looking through each picture to find a small orange dragon.
The story is fun to read and I really enjoyed reading about how real dragons act. I also loved the font. I think the fonts made the story even more fun. I would recommend this book for any child; especially those that love dragons. Dragons are Real is the perfect book to read with their dragon friend.

**Connor Says**

“I like that there is a little dragon on almost every page. My favorite part is when all the dragons are camouflaged everywhere because they turned into other things and you get to find all the dragons.”

**JT Says**

“The baby dragon is cute. I like the page where everything is a dragon, like the chair and the lamppost and the tree.”

John Bloom and the Victory Garden: Digging In Blog Tour

BeachBoundbooks is pleased to be coordinating a Blog Tour for the children’s historical fiction book John Bloom and the Victory Garden: Digging In by Leigh Shearin from May 10 – May 31, 2016. We are happy to be providing a review for the tour. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway at then end. Thanks for stoping by!

About the Book

Title: John Bloom and the Victory Garden: Digging In | Author: Leigh Shearin Genre: Children’s Historical Fiction | Number of Pages: 106 | Publication Date: January 22, 2016 | Summary: The fun continues in Appleside, NJ, as John Bloom and his pals live, laugh, and watch the incredible events of late 1942 as they unfold across the world. The attack on Pearl Harbor has brought America into the
global war, and everyone’s involved- even children! Join them as they do what they can to help with the war effort, even from a small, rural, American town.

**My Review**

I really enjoyed reading John Bloom and the Victory Garden: Digging In. We typically read and review fantasy and have never really read a historical fiction so I wasn’t sure what to expect. This book is a fun and very interesting read. There is plently of history facts in the story and I found myself wanting to look up more about some of the things that were mentioned. The book follows John Bloom and his friends. Together they are the America Boys Club, or Sullivan’s Crew later in the book. The boys with the help of their friend, 90 year old Mr. Hutchins, build a Victory Garden and try to do their part to help America in the war. The book is the second in a series. I believe that if you wanted you could read this without having to read the first book. While reading you will get some of the backstory from the first book. However, I did read the first book and highly recommend reading both. Both books are fun and have you wanting to read more. John Bloom and the Victory Garden: Digging In end with “THE END (for now)…” I look forward to more adventures with John Bloom and his friends.

___________________________________________

**My Review**

I found Whispers of Trees to be a bit different from what I was expecting. The first chapter starts off a bit eerily as we meet Declan and his family and learn that his little brother Colin is missing somewhere in an ancient Irish forest filled with large and twisting trees.
The story is told from Declan’s perspective and we join him on his journey to not only find his brother but find out about himself as well.
The book is a quick and interesting read. What really intrigued me about Whispers of Trees was the stories and legends about the trees. The book serves as a great reminder that we should respect the forest and all living things. I think that from time to time we should all remember to listen to the whispers of the trees.

**Connor Says**

“I like it. It was interesting. The pictures of the trees were cool because I saw their faces. I didn’t like that Declan didn’t like his little brother. I love my little brother. I liked the ending because I learned about Mrs. O’Leary and I wonder if Declan’s mom knew her.”

About the Author: Lisa Marie Schinski

author

I was born and raised in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. I currently reside in King of Prussia. I wrote the story about the Sore Prickly Bear when I was 8 years old. My teacher, Mrs. Ulrich encouraged me to write and also gave me the young author’s award. I found this book after my mom passed away last year. I had a great childhood but when I wrote this book, my parents got divorced, we moved and I changed schools. A lot of changes for an 8 year old. So I guess I felt like Fuzzy.

Around October 2015, I took the book into work to show my friends because this past year and a half has been very hard for me and my family. I knew when I showed my friends, they would laugh and cry because my life was again Fuzzy’s. My friends, Denice, Dee, Candace, Rick, Gina, Tara, Nancy, Tamara and Gina encouraged me to publish this book. So here I am!

I am now 46 years old. I have a great job, great friends, and great family. But there are still days that feel very bad and very unfair.

My goal for publishing this book is to help children understand that bad things happen and bad days happen. But when we have friends and family in our life to help us laugh at ourselves, we can heal and move forward. Everyone has a bad day, week, month or even years. My dream is to share this story for children to know they are not alone and everyone has a bad day.

I am so grateful for my family and friends.

“That’th what I thaid” was published in February 2016. Lauren Panco inspired me to write this story. It is for children who have a hard time with their R’s and S’s. I think many of us have! I want children to know it’s ok to sound different and with practice, it changes. Don’t let anyone make fun of you. We are all perfect the way we are!

Putter and the Red Car: A Cross Country Family Adventure is a picture book by Kate K. Lund. We were given a free copy of the book in exchange for a review. All opinions are our own honest opinions.

Putter and the Red Car: A Cross Country Family Adventure is the story of a dog, Putter, that goes on a trip across the United States from Boston to Seattle with his family. The story is told from the dog’s point of view. Putter shares with us the cities that he stopped in and some firsts that he experienced.

The book is cute and simple. The illustration are nice watercolors. They lend nicely to the overall feel and simplicity of the book.

I knew that JT would love this book because he loves dogs. He especially loved it since Putter is the one telling the story. Connor also enjoyed reading the book to JT. Puter and the Red Car leaves a with a nice message. We can learn from Putter that we shouldn’t be scared to try new things or go on new adventures. We should try to be like Putter and be excited and optimistic for new adventures that will come our way.

I also like that at the end of the book there is a map that shows us where Putter went on his adventure. I think that this book would make a nice starting out point for young kids to learn some geography.

**JT Says**

“I like the book. I love the dog. I want to pet him and hug him. I like all the pictures of Putter. My favorite is this one because it has two dogs.”

If you’d like to check out this book you can find it on Amazon. I believe it will be enjoyed by young readers anywhere from 4-8, especially if they love dogs.
