**My Review**

I very much enjoyed Initiation: Sky Raiders Academy Book One. The book starts out when Tommy and his move in with his uncle following his father’s death. After a rough two days at his new school, Tommy is met by Mr. Bellarium. Mr. Bellarium promises Tommy adventure at a new school, Sky Raiders Academy, where students learn to manage the weather. Tommy happily agrees to join the school and starts off on his adventure to become a sky raider. From the beginning the reader is drawn in to Tommy’s story but the story becomes even more exciting in chapter 2 when Tommy is visited by Mr. Bellarium. The book is creative, fun, and keeps the reader engrossed throughout. Connor, my 10 year old, wanted to keep reading and even JT (7), who normally doesn’t stay focused on longer chapter books, was happy to listen to this book. The boys also enjoyed the llamas used a breaks throughout the book. This enchanting book is great for anyone who enjoys a magical-filled fantasy and I highly recommend checking it out.

About the Author

susancount One day…I began to write with no preconceived ideas about anything. I’d read what I had written the day before and add another scene to the adventure. No one could have been more astounded than I was when it turned into a book. The whole process gave me great joy and restored my spirit after a season of loss. My motivation was my desire to bless one particular young lady with a story to show her a love relationship in a family, with the Lord, and with a horse. I truly thought the story would remain in a drawer until she was old enough to read it. Surprise.
I write at an antique secretary desk which belonged to the same grandmother who introduced me to horse books. The desk has secret compartments and occupies a glass room with a forest view. Bunnies and cardinals regularly interrupt my muse, as do my horses grazing in a clearing. Though I am a rider and lover of horses, I make no claims of expertise in any riding discipline. I hope that my research keeps me from annoying those who would know. The only thing more fun than riding might be writing horse adventure stories. Saddle up and ride along!

This exciting story celebrates the varied traditions of every culture while also highlighting the delicious similarities that bring us all together. Take a look inside the book…

**My Review**

I really loved Rice & Rocks. The author did a great job highlighting the importance of culture and tradition. I loved seeing Giovanni’s journey with his aunt and Jasper the Congo African Grey Parrot to different places around the world to find out if they eat rice and rocks too.
I also loved seeing the illustrations. There was so much detail in each one which made them especially fun to look at. I highly recommend Rice & Rocks. It is truly a great picture book that presents culture and traditions in a way that is easy for kids to understand.

**Connor and JT Say**

Both boys pretty much had the same things to say about this book so I’m putting their reviews together.
They both liked the book. Jasper, the parrot, was their favorite character. They thought he was cool. They would both like to see another book where they go on another trip with Jasper to some other countries to learn about them.

About the Book

Title: The Adventures of Lovable Lobo – Selfies in the Wild

Written and illustrated by C.L. Murphy

Published by Peanut Butter Prose

Date published: August 1, 2016

Recommended ages: 3 to 7

Number of pages: 28

Summary: Lobo and his sidekick raven find a trail camera in their neck of the woods, and it attracts the attention of forest friends. Images captured have never been sillier or more candid. Just as their wild dispositions are exposed, the photo shoot comes to an unexpected end and they’re all left wondering why. The reason may be obvious.

**My Review**

I enjoyed reading C.L. Murphy’s newest book, Selfies in the Wild. This book shows what happens when Lovable Lobo and his friends find a camera in the woods. As soon as I started reading the book I was thinking that it reminded me of the fun pictures I’ve seen from wildlife photographers. At the end of the book C.L. Murphy explains that she was inspired by some animals captured on her own trail camera that seemed to be posing for the camera. It’s so much fun to imagine what these animals are thinking and that’s exactly what C.L. Murphy gives us with this book. Selfies in the Wild is cute and fun to read and kids will enjoy the silly selfies taken by Lovable Lobo and friends.

**JT Says**

“I liked it. The animals are silly.”

**My Review**

I found Whispers of Trees to be a bit different from what I was expecting. The first chapter starts off a bit eerily as we meet Declan and his family and learn that his little brother Colin is missing somewhere in an ancient Irish forest filled with large and twisting trees.
The story is told from Declan’s perspective and we join him on his journey to not only find his brother but find out about himself as well.
The book is a quick and interesting read. What really intrigued me about Whispers of Trees was the stories and legends about the trees. The book serves as a great reminder that we should respect the forest and all living things. I think that from time to time we should all remember to listen to the whispers of the trees.

**Connor Says**

“I like it. It was interesting. The pictures of the trees were cool because I saw their faces. I didn’t like that Declan didn’t like his little brother. I love my little brother. I liked the ending because I learned about Mrs. O’Leary and I wonder if Declan’s mom knew her.”

About the Author: Lisa Marie Schinski

author

I was born and raised in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. I currently reside in King of Prussia. I wrote the story about the Sore Prickly Bear when I was 8 years old. My teacher, Mrs. Ulrich encouraged me to write and also gave me the young author’s award. I found this book after my mom passed away last year. I had a great childhood but when I wrote this book, my parents got divorced, we moved and I changed schools. A lot of changes for an 8 year old. So I guess I felt like Fuzzy.

Around October 2015, I took the book into work to show my friends because this past year and a half has been very hard for me and my family. I knew when I showed my friends, they would laugh and cry because my life was again Fuzzy’s. My friends, Denice, Dee, Candace, Rick, Gina, Tara, Nancy, Tamara and Gina encouraged me to publish this book. So here I am!

I am now 46 years old. I have a great job, great friends, and great family. But there are still days that feel very bad and very unfair.

My goal for publishing this book is to help children understand that bad things happen and bad days happen. But when we have friends and family in our life to help us laugh at ourselves, we can heal and move forward. Everyone has a bad day, week, month or even years. My dream is to share this story for children to know they are not alone and everyone has a bad day.

I am so grateful for my family and friends.

“That’th what I thaid” was published in February 2016. Lauren Panco inspired me to write this story. It is for children who have a hard time with their R’s and S’s. I think many of us have! I want children to know it’s ok to sound different and with practice, it changes. Don’t let anyone make fun of you. We are all perfect the way we are!

Leonardo da Vinci Gets A Do-Over

Leonardo da Vinci Gets A Do-Over by Mark P. Friedlander, Jr. is the first book in the Innovators In Action! series. We received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are our own honest opinions.

IMG_1155

Just as the title implies, the premise of the book is that da Vinci gets a do-over. Leonardo got a second chance to live in the year 2000 so that he can invent and actually get a chance to make one of his inventions. When he arrives back in his hometown of Florence he meets an American middle school class that has come to learn about the Renaissance.

The first thing that drew me to this book was that it had to do with Leonardo da Vinci. I find da Vinci do be a really fascinating person to learn about and wanted to introduce him more to my boys. This book has a lot of great educational information. It not only touches on Leonardo da Vinci but you’ll find information on many other subjects as well.

There is a link to the teacher’s guide on one of the first pages of the book. I highly recommend checking out this guide. It has a lot of great information. It’s packed with vocabulary, discussion questions, and hands-on activities. It even has a breakdown by chapter.

I think that this book would work well for a wide range of ages and would make a great homeschool unit study based on Leonardo da Vinci. I’m really interested in finding out what other innovators will be featured in this series.

The Kafka Legacy- Book 1: The Bad Luck Curse

*Disclosure: We received a free e-book copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are our own.*

The Bad Luck Curse is book one of The Kafka Legacy middle grade fantasy series by Jason Flanigan.

Screenshot (327)

The Bad Luck Curse is a really great children’s fantasy. Both Connor and I loved this from the very first chapter. In fact, Connor actually told me when he saw the front cover “I know I’m going to like this book.”

The main character is a young wizard named James. At the beginning of the book he is about to turn eleven and come into his powers which had previously been bound because of the Kafka Curse.

The Kafka Curse is also known as the bad luck curse and it was a curse placed on his family. The book follows James’ adventures as he learns to control his powers and deal with any bad luck that comes his way. Besides James we also meet his grandmother Louise, his two best friends Amy and Tim, his inherited wereparakeet Amy, and a secondary realm creature named Roedalgia.

Connor Says:

“I like it. It’s the best. My favorite character is probably James. He has a good natural spell ability that would come in useful. If I had a were animal I would like a weredog as long as it always eats vegetables. Everyone should read this.”

I think that kids ages 8 and up can enjoy this book. It is easy and fun to read. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this fantastic children’s fantasy.

Sock Monster Review

SockMonster_Banner

Welcome to my tour stop for Sock Monster by Stacey E. Campbell! This is a children’s picture book and the tour runs December 14-18 with reviews. Check out the tour page for the full schedule.

SM cover 10-21-15About the Book:
When Billy refuses to pick up his clothes the sock monster comes to teach him a lesson.

**My Review**

Sock Monster is a really cute book. It tells us about what happens when you don’t pick up your dirty clothes. I’m sure this is relevant to just about anyone. I know that my boys tend to throw their clothes wherever and I always to tell them to put them in the laundry room. I like the style that the story is written in and the story line along with he illustrations are cute. I really enjoyed looking at the pictures. I loved the fact that the back cover has a picture of the sock monster holding a sign that says “WARNING-Reading this book may result in random acts of tidiness”. Who knows, maybe this will inspire the boys to actually put away their clothes.

**JT Says**

I thought the story was funny. I liked it. My favorite picture is the one where the sock monster is growing. I don’t want a sock monster to come.

**Connor Says**

I liked the book. It was interesting because I’ve never seen a book where when someone is saying no they actually have a picture of them shaking their head. I liked that picture. My favorite picture was when the sock monster was growing.

Excerpts From Reviews

The King’s Ransom:

“Cheryl Carpinello’s middle grade adventure novel, featuring a visit from King Arthur and a few of his knights, is a wonderful introduction ~ to King Arthur, and to the lives of knights and others in a castle.”

“I do wish the story had been a little longer, but as this book is aimed at a younger reader with a shorter attention span, I can understand why it was not.”

“It’s a great story about loyalty, friendship and overcoming obstacles.”

“This was a delightful rollercoaster of a read, taking us on a journey with each of the characters. There were moments of great sadness, where I felt so wholeheartedly for the characters and their situations.”

Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend:

I read this book to my son and daughter and they both loved it. It was a fast-paced book with a lot of excitement.”

“Will appeal to middle school aged readers, especially girls but boys too, who can relate to the idea of wanting independence yet struggling with the obligations that come with it.”

“Wizards, unicorns, and dragons are a few of the mythical creatures you will encounter in this enchanting book.”

“It is interesting and filled with enough Arthurian legend to keep young readers entertained. The questions at the end are great for comprehension and give the readers a chance to discuss their own take on the story.”
