Our Big Bend Trip Day 1- Marfa to Fort Davis

Texas is divided into 7 regions and we had been to all but 1. That region was Big Bend Country.

So, I decided to plan a trip to this region during spring break. I planned it pretty last minute so there were not a lot of options for lodging. There are some places that are booked out very far in advance, such as the Chisos Mountain Lodge that is actually located inside Big Bend National Park. We ended up staying one night in 4 different places and 2 different cities.

We headed out at about 6:45am.

Our first stop was going to be Fort Davis but I had heard from several people that we needed to visit Marfa so we made a stop at Marfa before heading on to Fort Davis. We made it to Marfa just in time for lunch. After driving through the town to see what our choices were, we decided to go to Pizza Foundation.

We arrived not long after they opened for the day but there were already orders ahead of us. When I got up to the line to order, the first thing I was asked was if we had called in our order ahead of time. We of course hadn’t done this so there were several other orders ahead of us. She told me that it would be about 45 minutes before they would be able to cook our pizza but I don’t think it actually took quite that long.

We ordered a pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms and then bacon on one half and onions on the other half. The pizza was delicious but it was also really big. We weren’t expecting to receive such a huge pizza.

After lunch we went over to the Marfa Maid Goat Dairy for a tour. Marfa Maid is a small goat dairy owned by a husband and wife. They only sell their products locally in Marfa and a few surrounding towns. We loved the tour; it was so much fun! The boys got to bottle feed some 4-day old baby goats and we received some delicious goat cheese. I’ll write a separate post all about it.

After our Marfa Maid tour we made our way over to Fort Davis. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Marfa. We went directly to Mountain Trails Lodge to check in to our cabin for the night, which I will also write a separate post about.

When we checked in, we asked the lady about food recommendations and one place she mentioned was the Stone Village Market. So, after checking out our cabin, we headed there and ordered some sandwiches from the deli for dinner. We took them back to the cabin to eat and stayed in for the night.

We really wanted to do some stargazing at night but it was so cloudy that we really couldn’t see anything. I kept hoping the clouds would clear; we went outside throughout the night to check but it never did clear up.

What areas of Texas have you been to?
